At United Pacific College (UPC), English is the primary language of instruction. All students enrolling in the General Studies Diploma and Business Administration & Management Diploma programs must demonstrate proficiency in English. Students who have earned a diploma or degree from an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution, where English is the language of instruction, automatically meet UPC’s language requirements.
Meeting Language Requirements
To ensure you meet the English language proficiency requirements, we recommend consulting with an advisor to determine the best pathway for you.
Speaking and Listening Requirements
- These requirements can be fulfilled by completing three years of full-time, in-person secondary or post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction and an official language of the country. Note that ESL (English as a Second Language) courses are not counted in this three-year period.
ESL Assessment and Programs
- UPC provides an English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment to help place students into appropriate programs and courses.
- Students who do not meet the minimum English language proficiency for admission into the General Studies Diploma and Business Administration & Management Diploma programs can improve their skills through UPC’s ESL Diploma program. As students improve their English proficiency, they can register for selected courses numbered 100 or higher, provided they meet specific course prerequisites.
Procedure for Demonstrating English Proficiency
Evidence of English language proficiency can be demonstrated through various options listed in the English Language Proficiency Standards, which are available in UPC brochures and on the UPC website. For the evidence to be valid, it must be sent directly from the institution or testing agency to the Office of the Registrar.
